What are Dentures?

Also known as ‘false teeth’, dentures are removable dental appliances that act as a replacement for missing teeth and surrounding tissue. We custom make dentures to closely match your natural teeth, giving a natural result that will enhance your smile.

Types of Dentures

There are two types of dentures – complete and partial dentures.  Complete dentures are used in cases where all of the teeth are missing, whilst partial dentures can be used in cases where some natural teeth still remain. Partial dentures are used to fill in any spaces created by missing teeth, and to prevent the remaining natural teeth from moving position.

Fitting Complete Dentures

Fitting dentures requires a number of appointments over a period of several weeks. Your dentist will take highly accurate impressions (molds) and measurements in order to create your custom made dentures. After the teeth have been removed you will be fitted with what is known as “immediate” dentures for a period of 4-6 weeks whilst the gum tissue heals. During this time your permanent “conventional” dentures will be made. These will be fitted once the tissues have shrunk and healed and any necessary adjustments have been made. A number of “try-in” appointments may be necessary to attain a proper fit, shape and colour, and fit.  At your final appointment, your dentist will make precise adjustments and place the completed denture, to ensure a natural and comfortable fit.

It is normal to experiences some soreness, as well as an increase in saliva flow, and possible chewing and speech difficulty for a period of time, however as your muscles and tissues become accustomed to the new dentures, this will subside.

Your dentist will give you detailed care instructions for your new dentures. Practicing good oral hygiene, and proper cleaning as well as regular dental visits will prolong the life of your new dentures. Although dentures are very durable appliances, they may have to be remade, repaired, or readjusted over time due to normal wear and tear.
